The Kennewick Lions’ defense stepped it up in the second half of Friday’s game against Hermiston to come away with a 34-12 victory in Kennewick.
The Bulldogs got on the board about midway through the first quarter on a short touchdown pass from Isaac Corey to Dale Krebs to give Hermiston a 6-0 lead. The lead lasted less than a minute after the Lions scored on a 35-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-6. A 15-yard touchdown run, and a field goal pushed the lead to 17-6.
Corey connected with Krebs for a second touchdown pass late in the second quarter to close the gap to 17-12 going into halftime.
The Lions (7-2 overall, 6-2 in conference) pulled away in the second half, scoring three times including an interception returned for a touchdown and a punt return for another score.
Corey was 20-for-34 for 191 yards in the air with two touchdowns, and one interception. He also led the Bulldogs with 42 rushing yards on 18 carries. Landon Shilhanek led the Hermiston receivers with 6 catches for 78 yards.
Hermiston (3-6, 3-5) will host Cheney on Friday.
