The Hermiston School District and the Columbia Basin Student Homebuilders Program will host the head of the Oregon’s Bureau of Labor and Industries when he visits the Fieldstone #2 home site on Friday, Sept. 18, and connects with the students as they work on the project.
For the past three years, Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian has helped 200 Oregon middle schools and high schools – serving more than 100,000 students – restore 21st century shop classes to prepare for careers in fields such as renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, construction, agriculture and health care.
“By investing directly in middle schools and high school career programs, we can provide access – early, before students drift for ears before find a viable path – hands-on learning and tinkering that can help student discover their talents and passions,” said Avakian.
Fieldstone #2 is the second home being built by the Columbia Basin Student Homebuilders Program. The first home successfully sold this past summer to retired Hermiston School District teachers.
