There could soon be dedicated left-turn lanes for north and southbound traffic on Fourth Street in Hermiston.

The Hermiston City Council will consider adding left-turn lanes to a section of N. Fourth Street at its July 10 meeting.

If the council moves ahead with the project, portions of E. Fourth Street will be designated as No Parking zones in the vicinity where it intersects with Main Street in order to accommodate the left-turn lanes. As a result, seven on-street commercial parking spaces within the area will be eliminated.

Once the work is complete, it will allow left-turning vehicles to hold in an area which is out of the main north/south travel lanes without impeding that traffic.

Hermiston Assistant City Manager Mark Morgan said recent and ongoing growth in the community — including 450 new housing units in development on Diagonal Road — is making the project necessary. Traffic count data collected in April showed the Fourth Street-Main Street intersection is nearing capacity in its current configuration.
