The Oregon Legislature’s Joint Committee on Student Success, a 14- member committee appointed by the Senate President and House Speaker, has released the full schedule for the Eastern Oregon leg of the Committee’s statewide tour to address gaps to student success.
The Hermiston visit will occur on April 25, beginning with a listening session with local students; site visits including Umatilla Head Start, and Morrow School District; a roundtable with community leaders, including two members from the business community; and dinner with local business leaders.
From 7-9 p.m., the committee will hold a public hearing at the Hermiston High School Auditorium. Because the public hearing is limited to two hours, participant remarks will be limited to two minutes. Business community members are also encouraged to sign up for the public hearing and express their unique workforce needs. As the landscape of education and employment needs are changing, employer input is critical. Signups for public testimony will begin at 6:30 p.m.
This committee is the Legislature’s effort to identify where Oregonians would like to see the state’s education investments go, and how to pay for it through tax and/or spending reforms. The business community will have an opportunity to voice concerns for education needs for their workforce. Hermiston Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Debbie Pedro and chamber board chairman Walmart D.C. General Manager Josh Burns will represent business community during the roundtable discussion.
