It is with sadness that we announce the passing away of our dad, Leonard Ackerman of Hermiston, age 78. Dad died peacefully at home on Oct. 17, 2022 after an extended illness. We will miss him dearly.
Dad was born in Walterboro, S.C. to George and Annie Ackerman.
As a teenager, Dad traveled west to Hermiston with his aunt and uncle, where he met our mom, Barbara DeFries Ackerman. Together, Dad and Mom owned and operated Ackerman Roofing for over 30 years.
Dad loved spending time in the mountains and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He charted his own course and was truly one of a kind. Dad’s humor, grit, generosity, companionship, and unique perspective will always be part of us. Love never ends.
Dad is survived by his son, Wade Ackerman; daughters, Kathy and Angie Ackerman; granddaughter, Britney Ackerman (Jacob Try); granddaughter, Lauren Ackerman; brother, Don Ackerman (Lynette); sister, Edith Mason; and many loved extended family members.
Dad was predeceased by our mom and his wife of 54 years, Barbara Ackerman; daughter, Brenda Ackerman; and brother, Carnell Ackerman.
A viewing will be held at Burns Mortuary, 685 W. Hermiston Ave., on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 4 to 7 p.m.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Hermiston Cemetery, Highway 395 and Cemetery Road. All are welcome.
