Psst – in case you didn’t notice, it got hot yesterday. The temperatures in the Hermiston area reached triple digits on Tuesday and more of the same is in the forecast toward the end of the week.
The official high at the Hermiston airport was 101 degrees on Tuesday and as the thermometer rose throughout the day, residents were trying to keep cool as best they could. The Hermiston Family Aquatic Center was bustling with people of all ages seeking relief from the sweltering heat.
Things got worse when about 1,500 Umatilla Electric customers lost power around 5 p.m., but service was restored by 6:45 p.m. for most of them.
The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting the slightest of cooling trends over the next few days with temperatures hitting just 98 today and dipping to a cool 95 degrees on Thursday. The high on Friday is expected to reach 97 followed by 99 on Saturday. The triple-digit heat is expected to return on Sunday.
The NWS is warning people about the dangers of leaving pets or children in cars. It doesn’t take long for a parked car to reach dangerous temperatures inside. According to the NWS, it takes just two minutes for a parked car (with the windows rolled up) to reach a deadly 94 degrees inside. According to San Francisco State University, there were 43 heat stroke-related deaths among children left in cars in 2013.
