Citizens in the area can walk for a cause at the World Suicide Prevention Day Remembrance Walk in Hermiston on Saturday, Sept. 10.

The event begins at 9 a.m. at the Elm Avenue entrance to Oxbow Trail. The intention of the Remembrance Walk is to raise awareness about suicide prevention, warning signs of suicide, celebrate survivors and to honor those lost.

The entrance area to the walk will have a few activities for participants to partake in, including: a station to write your reason for walking or share a photo of a loved one, an honor bead station to silently show your connection to the cause based on the color of necklace you’re wearing, and a table with free resources provided by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Walchli Farms will be providing sliced watermelon to all attendees after the walk.

There is no registration or fee to participate in the walk. The group organizing the event hopes that the walk will increase prevention awareness and provide an opportunity to discuss the sensitive subject, something that affects everyone in our community.

“Many people have been affected by suicide,” says one of the event coordinators. “We want to provide a space for people with shared experiences to connect and learn what we can do to prevent future losses.”
