Jack Jenkins, who had a long and influential career in the Hermiston education system, has died at the age of 97.
Jenkins died Saturday in Tacoma, Wash. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 16 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hermiston.
Jenkins began his career with the Hermiston School District in 1960 when he became principal of Hermiston High School, a role he held until 1978. During that time, he helped oversee the growth of both the community and school system, playing key roles in the developing the educational curriculum of Hermiston’s students.
He was described as having a hands-on approach to education. He helped create the Hermiston Ski Club and was an avid supporter of student athletics.
In 1978, Jenkins became assistant superintendent of schools. He was an active member of the Hermiston Kiwanis Club, Hermiston Elks Club and St. John’s Episcopal Church.
