Lucy Veliz died on Sept. 5, 2015 at her home in Hermiston at the age of 74.

She was born on April 30, 1941 to parents, Baldomero Zamarron and Concepcion Guadion. Lucy was raised in Progreso, Texas until the 8th grade and then attended high school in Weslaco, Texas for a time. Her family moved to Mabton, Washington where Lucy was the Homecoming queen her senior year and graduated high school in 1961. Lucy was united in marriage to Pedro Veliz Jr. in 1963 in Mabton, Washington. They lived in Sunnyside, Washington until 1968 when they moved to Hermiston, Oregon. Lucy worked for the Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs, and later in Human Resources for Lamb Weston – ConAgra Foods in Hermiston. She went to work for Immigration Naturalization Service and was stationed in Miami and Lincoln, Neb., and worked U.S. Customs in Oroville, Wash., through the 1990s before returning to Hermiston in the early 2000s. Lucy worked as a Morrow County judge’s clerk until May of 2015. She was a member of Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Hermiston where she was active in Catholic Daughters for many years. Lucy was very supportive of her children and grandchildren’s many school and sports activities. She enjoyed fishing with her girlfriends, cooking, and cherished time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren which delighted her right up to the end of her life.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years: Pedro Veliz Jr., Hermiston, OR; son: Pete Veliz and wife Vicky; daughters: Sonia Veliz, & Lisa Garza and husband Roland, all of Hermiston, OR; brothers: Balomero Zamarron, Weslaco, TX, & Oscar Zamarron, Weslaco, TX; sisters: Beatriz Zamarron, Weslaco, TX, Elva Zamarron Gamez, Weslaco, TX, Rosario Zamarron Gonzalez, Weslaco, TX, Eufemia Zamarron Martinez, Harlingen, TX; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Alex & Felix Zamarron; and sister: Maria Rodriguez.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, Sept. 11, 2015 at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Hermiston.

Burial followed at the Hermiston Cemetery.
