Mabel Ruth Walker Bischke of Hermiston passed away on May 26, 2022 at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston at the age of 96.
She was born on Feb. 4, 1926 in Wallowa to Frank and Winnie Walker.
Mabel married Reinhold Bischke on March 2, 1943. She was a homemaker throughout her life. Reinhold and Mabel owned Bischke’s Watermelon Stand on Highway 395 in Hermiston, and later she worked in the kitchen at Good Shepherd Hospital for many years. Mabel then worked at Sunset Elementary School as lunch lady until her retirement. Mabel was a faithful member of the New Hope Church in Hermiston.
Mabel is survived by her four children, LaVonna (Michael) Harless of Covington, Va., Dennis (Casey) Bischke of Gresham, Bonnie (W.C.) Abbott of Rutsburg, Va. and Arlen (Bonnie) Bischke of Roseburg; grandchildren, Jody (Tony) Garberg of Hermiston, Patrick (Martha) Carter of Covington, Va., Duane (Stacy) Carter of Hermiston, Cam (Michelle) Abbott of Madison Heights, Va., Heather (Jeff) Johnson Rogers, Arkansas, Jennifer Bischke of Pendleton, Andrea (Kevin) Walters of Kennewick, Wash. and Nicole Bischke of Portland; great grandchildren, Kaylie, Kaytie and Kenzie Carter of Covington, Va., Nicholas and Tyra Carter of Hermiston, Justus Bischke, Jayden Winn and Pearl Walters of Kennewick, Wash., Addison and Austin Garberg of Hermiston, Conner Johnson of Rogers, Ark., Bryson and Brendan Gage of Pendleton and Gianna Dreher of Portland; and niece and good friend, Bette Lou Terjeson of Umatilla. She had several nieces and nephews and a lifelong friend, Lou Womack.
Mabel was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Reinhold Bischke; her grandson, Tyler Bischke; her brothers, Mayo, Robert Woodrow, Gilbert and Henry Walker; and her sisters, Mary Goodwin, Blanche Dawson and Jessie Walker.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at the Burns Mortuary Chapel, 685 W. Hermiston Ave.
Interment will follow at Hermiston Cemetery.
