Umatilla County Master Gardeners will launch Seed to Supper, a free six-week gardening class, starting May 6 and ending June 10.
The classes will be held in Pendleton every Saturday from 9:30 to 11: 30 a.m. at the Umatilla County Extension’s Pendleton office at Blue Mountain Community College’s Umatilla Hall. The six-week course is a partnership between Umatilla County Master Gardeners, Umatilla County Public Health, and Oregon State University Extension.
Participants of all skill levels are encouraged to join. Each week will cover a different aspect of gardening, including soil preparation, seed starting, irrigation, pest and disease management, harvesting, and more. The course includes a book and all necessary course materials.
By offering this free gardening course, the Umatilla County Master Gardeners and their partners hope to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to start growing their food and making healthy eating a part of their daily lives.
“We believe that everyone deserves access to fresh, healthy produce, and we hope this program will inspire people to start growing their food,” says Valerie Conner, a Umatilla County Master Gardener. “We strongly encourage families, youth, and seniors to attend these classes and discover the joys of gardening.”
The Seed to Supper program is vital to the Pendleton Community Gardens project, which seeks to revitalize two existing community gardens. These initiatives are part of the Umatilla County Public Health’s 2022 to 2026 Community Health Improvement Plan, a collaborative effort involving over 30 local health and community organizations to improve health outcomes by identifying top priorities and implementing effective strategies.
Transportation to the classes is available for those who need it, and refreshments will be provided. The meeting room is wheelchair accessible.
