Maxine L. Rice of Hermiston passed away in Hermiston on Feb. 7, 2024 at the age of 88.
She was born on June 11, 1935 in Walla Walla, Wash. to Emmett and Frances Bowers Simmons.
Maxine grew up and attended schools in Walla Walla, Wash., where she graduated from high school. As a young adult, she lived in the Portland area for several years. She then moved to Hermiston, where she had resided for many years. Maxine worked as a clerk at the Social Security office in Pendleton for near 30 years, where she eventually retired.
Maxine volunteered at the Good Shepherd Hospital Auxiliary and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and was a member of the Hermiston Elks Lodge (Elkettes).
She is survived by brothers, Norman Simmons, Gene Simmons, John Simmons, Lynn Weathermon and Alan Weathermon; sisters, Sue Ann Hays and Kay Luisi; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Frances (Clarence) Weathermon; father and stepmother, Emmett (Jane) Simmons; and a sister, Geri McMullen.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, 2024 at the Hermiston Cemetery.
