Just in time for Halloween, McNary Heights Elementary students found a fall surprise waiting for them Wednesday afternoon.

For the second year, school staff and volunteers built a pumpkin patch and hay maze behind the elementary school. Each first-grade and kindergarten student will have the chance to run through the maze, pick and decorate a pumpkin this week.

“Last year, only the kindergarten participated; however, this year, one of our teachers grew and donated so many pumpkins that we were able to expand and include first grade,” Vice Principal Rick Cotterell said Wednesday. “Between kinder and first grade, over 250 students will have an opportunity to visit the McNary Heights patch and take home their very own pumpkin.”

After running through the maze, each student chose a gourd from the field. The only restriction was that each student had to carry their own selection. Each student then used paper, markers and other materials to decorate their pumpkins to take home.
