Ramona R. “Mona” Fischer died on July 23, 2023 at her home in Irrigon at the age of 89 years.
She was born on May 7, 1934 in Walla Walla, Wash. to Glen and Ruth Diggins.
Mona was raised and attended school in Elgin, graduating from Elgin High School in the class of 1952. She then attended nursing school at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton, where she earned her nursing degree. Mona worked at Good Shepherd Hospital, St. Anthony Hospital and Pioneer Memorial Hospital before a long tenure at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Hermiston.
Mona married Troy Fischer on May 12, 1981 in Las Vegas, Nev. She was an avid reader who enjoyed cooking, gardening, flowers, and many outdoor activities including camping, fishing and hunting. Mona was a life member of the Rainbow Girls in Elgin. She was very supportive of Troy’s involvement in the Masonic lodge, preparing meals for many Masonic functions, and is very highly regarded in the Masonic world.
She is survived by her husband, Troy Fischer, Irrigon; daughter, Judy Jimenez, Irrigon; sons, Gordon Hoffnagle, Colville, Wash., William Hoffnagle, Irrigon and Trey Fischer, Molalla; brother, Norman Diggins, Bonanza; grandchildren, Erika, Cydney, Jordan and Garrett; and great-grandchildren, Jazira, Kai, Vivian, Charlotte, Esme and Connor.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Gene Diggins; and a grandson, Edgar Cornejo.
A rosary will be held on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at 5 p.m. at Burns Mortuary Chapel, Hermiston.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 31, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Burns Mortuary Chapel, Hermiston.
Burial will follow at Desert Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Irrigon.
