Morrow County voters approved a nonbinding ballot measure on Tuesday aimed at eventually expanding the borders of Idaho into parts of Oregon.
Ballot Measure 25-88 received support from 60 percent of county voters in Tuesday’s election. The measure mandates that Morrow County commissioners meet at least three times a year to discuss the relocation of the Oregon-Idaho border.
Wheeler County voters also approved a similar nonbinding measure on Tuesday. So far, 11 of 15 counties have approved similar measures.
Organizers behind the “Greater Idaho” movement are hoping that the passage of these measures will pressure lawmakers in Salem and Boise to seriously look at changing the states’ borders.
The intent behind the movement is to align Eastern Oregon and parts of Central and Southern Oregon with Idaho, a conservative red state with similar political values as rural Oregon.
