The Kamiakin Braves got an up-close viewing of the Carson Morter show Friday night as the Hermiston senior had four interceptions and caught a pair of touchdown passes in the Bulldogs’ 28-7 win at Kennison Field.
The Bulldogs (2-0) took advantage of Morter’s second interception when senior quarterback Chase Knutz hit Ethan Snow on a 31-yard pass for the first score of the game. Morter, however, was just getting started.
On the Braves’ next possession, Morter intercepted Kamiakin quarterback Tyson Patten for the third time and then proceeded to catch his first touchdown pass of the game to put Hermiston up 14-0 in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs opened the third quarter with a long drive that culminated in a 2-yard run by Sam Colbray. Hermiston ate up a lot of clock on the 11-play, 73-yard drive.
Kamiakin got on the board in the third quarter, but only after a defensive pass interference penalty nullified an interception by Hermiston’s Bob Coleman. The Braves ended up moving the ball 69 yards and scored on a 4-yard run by Tomul Faamausilli.
Any thoughts the Braves may have had of getting back in the game were ended when Hermiston marched 65 yards down the field on their next possession and scored when Knutz hit Morter on another touchdown pass, this one a 6-yard toss with just under 13 seconds left in the third to put finish up the scoring for the night.
Morter’s night wasn’t over just yet. The senior defensive back stymied a fourth-quarter Kamiakin drive with his fourth interception of the game.
Knutz finished the game with 17 completions on 33 attempts for 263 years and he passed the 5,000 career passing yard mark. Snow led all receivers with 7 catches for 103 yards and a score. Colbray led the Bulldogs rushing attack with 110 yards on 25 carries. The Bulldogs finished the night with 414 total yards.
Hermiston will host Springfield next Friday at Kennison Field. The Millers (2-0) are coming off a 30-14 win over Thurston on Friday.
Kick-off time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
