Nellie Cogan Passes Away at Age 89

Nellie Marie Cogan died on June 11, 2014, at Ashley Manor in Pendleton at the age of 89.

She was born Sept. 11, 1924, in Rogers, Ark., to Fred and Mary (Crone) Castor. Nellie was raised in Rogers, Arkansas. Nellie and John were married for 66 years when he passed in 2012. They lived in the Portland area until 1968, when they moved to Pendleton and then to Irrigon in 1977.

Nellie was a homemaker, bookkeeper and worked for a short time at Montgomery Ward in Pendleton. Nellie loved to be with her family, particularly her grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, fishing and being outdoors. Nellie was a member of Columbia View Community Church in Irrigon.

She is survived by her children: John Cogan, Meacham, Ore., Connie Ball and husband Jay, Pendleton, Ore., and Lesa Mokler and husband Patrick, Kennewick, Wash.; four grandsons, and six great-grandchildren.

Nellie was preceded in death by her husband John in 2012, grandson John Henry Cogan and four sisters.

Nellie’s family would like to thank the staff at Ashley Manor and Hospice for their loving and compassionate care.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 14 at 1 p.m. at Burns Mortuary chapel in Hermiston, with a reception to follow at Oxford Suites in Hermiston.
