Parks Department Offering Summertime Fun

The Hermiston Parks and Recreation Department is serving up several great opportunities for kids to learn from new experiences while enjoying their summer break. There are several new enrichment camps and some classes and events to spark kids’ interest.

Hermiston Kids Triathlon – This swimming, bicycling and running event for kids from 4 through 12 years will take place on Saturday, June 24, at 9 a.m.

All 7- through 12-year-olds must be able to swim 50 meters, bike 1 mile, and run .75 mile. All 4- through 6-year-olds must be able to swim 50 feet (lifejackets are available), bike .6 mile (training wheels are allowed), and run .4 mile.

The cost is $15 per participant for residents and $18 per participant for non-residents. The registration deadline is June 17. Call 541-667-5018 to sign up.

All participants are winners by finishing this non-competitive annual event, sponsored by Tom’s Country.

Junior Golf Camp – This camp is for kids from 6 through 14 years and will take place at Echo Hills Golf Course. Each session will meet Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. OR 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Session 1 will run from June 19 through June 22, and Session 2 will run from June 26 through June 29. The cost is $40 per participant for residents and $50 per participant for non-residents.

City of Hermiston Junior Golf Tournament – This event, sponsored by Fiesta Foods, is for kids from 6 through 14 years. It will take place on Thursday, July 6, with the shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $15 per participant for residents and $19 per participant for non-residents.

RecTennis Summer Camp – This camp is for kids from 6 through 14 years. They will meet Monday through Friday from June 19 through August 18 (no camp on July 4). There are several time options to choose from. Register online.

Guitar Camp – This camp is for kids from 8 through 12 years. They will meet from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from June 19 through June 30. The cost is $40 per participant for residents and $50 per participant for non-residents.

Summer Fun Day Camp – This camp is for kids from 6 through 11 years. They will meet from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, from June 19 through August 11 (no camp on July 4). The cost is $75 per week per participant for residents and $95 per week per participant for non-residents. Register for all eight weeks at once and receive a 10 per cent discount.

Discovering the Clown in You – These classes are for those 7 years through adult. They will run from June 26 through June 29. The times are 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday. The cost is $50 per participant for residents and $63 per participant for non-residents.

Film Kids – These classes are for kids from 9 through 16 years. The days and times for all classes are Tuesdays from 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Session 2 dates are June 6, 13, 20 and 27; Session 3 dates are July 11, 18 and 25; Session 4 dates are August 1, 8, 15 and 22. The cost for each session is $50 per participant for residents and $63 per participant for non-residents.

Mini Filmmakers – These classes are for kids from 5 through 8 years. The days and times for all classes are Thursdays from 4:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Session 2 dates are June 1, 8, 15 and 22; Session 3 dates are July 6, 13,20 and 27; Session 4 dates are August 3, 10, 17 and 24. The cost for each session is $50 per participant for residents and $63 per participant for non-residents.

Metal Art Camp – This camp is for kids 8 through 14 years. There will be two sessions: Session 1 will run from June 26 through June 29, and Session 2 will run from July 3 through July 6. Days and times for all classes are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The cost is $40 per participant for residents and $50 per participant for non-residents.

Advanced Digital Camera Class – These classes are for those 16 years and older. They will be held on Tuesdays, June 20 and June 27, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $40 per participant for residents and $50 per participant for non-residents. Participants must bring their own DSLR cameras, must be familiar with their cameras, and must have taken the beginner class.
