Pedestrian Killed on Highway 11 in Milton-Freewater

A 69-year old Milton-Freewater man died Monday evening when he was struck by a pick-up truck as he attempted to cross Highway 11 on foot in the Milton-Freewater area.

According to Oregon State Police Sgt. Sterling Hall, at approximately 6:50 p.m., Juan Flores-Romero was trying to cross Highway 11 near milepost 33 on foot from the west side to the east side when he was struck in the left south-bound lane by a 1999 Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pick-up’s driver, Miguel Cisneros Lara, 31, of Milton-Freewater, was not injured. He was cited by OSP for driving while suspended and driving uninsured.

Highway 11 at the scene of the crash consists of two lanes in both directions separated by a center left turn lane. There is no marked crosswalk.

OSP troopers were assisted at the scene by Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, Milton-Freewater Ambulance Service, and Oregon Department of Transportation. The highway was closed nearly three hours during the investigation.
