Motorists, pedestrians and local residents along Emigrant Avenue in Pendleton will see construction activities starting today.
Crews from Brown Contracting Inc. of Eugene will begin upgrading the sidewalk ADA ramps at the SW 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th Street intersections. The work will result in sidewalk and lane closures over the next few months while the ADA ramps are brought up to current safety standards.
Pedestrian detours will route people around the sidewalk construction area. Motorists may want to use alternate routes to avoid lane closures and other traffic impacts. Depending on weather conditions, the work could be completed by the end of March.
“The contractor plans to start on the north side of the road and work from 6th to 9th Street,” said Oregon Department of Transportation Assistant Project Manager Ty Burns. “Once the work on the north side is complete, they will work on the south side of the road.”
Along with sidewalk closures/detours, one lane of traffic will be impacted during this work and on-street parking will be reduced. The contractor will be posting public notification before reducing any on-street parking.
Two curb ramps will typically be upgraded/installed for each corner of an impacted intersection, with ramps pointing in each direction across adjacent streets. All four corners of each intersection in the project area will be addressed. Work will also include right of way acquisitions, the relocation of some utilities and signage, and modifications to storm drainage inlets as needed.
This ADA curb ramp upgrade work is being done as part of a larger statewide effort to update all curb ramps on or along the state highway system by 2032.
