A Pendleton man was killed Sunday morning in a motor vehicle crash on E. Bingham Road.

The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash site around 9:40 a.m. near mile marker 36 in Umatilla County. Steven Cain, 37, was driving southeast on Bengham Road in a 2005 Jeep Wrangler with two other companion vehicles traveling with him.

According to the sheriff’s office, Cain lost control of the Jeep and it ran off the icy road, rolling down an embankment and hitting a tree about 50 feet off the road.

Cain was seat belted inside the vehicle and unconscious when his friends reached him. The roof of the Jeep was destroyed and the vehicle was trapped by trees. Cain’s friends winched the Jeep away from the trees and freed Cain, and then transported him about 15 miles where they met with an ambulance crew from Umatilla Tribal Fire and Ambulance. Cain had several head injuries and never regained consciousness.
