Pendleton Police Warn of Social Security Scams Making the Rounds

The Pendleton Police Department recently posted on Facebook that Social Security scam calls are once again making the rounds.

These calls often appear to come from local phone numbers. A message states that your Social Security card is being canceled, or that an arrest warrant has been issued for an alleged crime. At least two PPD officers have received the arrest warrant call.

The PPD listed these reminders to help you protect your Social Security account:

• Social Security will not upload your file to the local courthouse for a warrant.
• Social Security will not ask for payment via wired money, gift cards, or text/email payment applications.
• Do not engage with the caller; just hang up.
• Do not provide or confirm personal information over the phone to anyone you don’t personally know.
• Do not call numbers provided in these messages.
• If you feel the need to check with Social Security, use a local number from the phone book or one that you look up yourself.
