A Hermiston man was arrested Tuesday on several charges including robbery and assault after allegedly stabbing a woman.
In the late evening hours of Oct. 26, Hermiston Police Department officers were called to a local store for a report of a female who had been stabbed.
The officers identified Anthony Robert Jones, 44, as the suspect and developed probable cause to arrest him on charges of first-degree robbery, strangulation, third-degree assault, and violating a restraining.
Jones was located and led officers on a vehicle pursuit that lasted about 45 minutes and covered several miles around the Hermiston area. The vehicle pursuit ended when Jones crashed into a garage on the east side of town.
He then fled on foot and was later located by officers and arrested. A plethora of traffic charges including felony elude (vehicle), misdemeanor elude (on foot from vehicle), reckless endangering, reckless driving, hit-and-run were added to his already long list of charges.
Jones was lodged in the Umatilla County Jail.
HPD Capt. Travis Eynon said vehicle pursuits are judgment cases that depend on various circumstances.
“When making a decision as to whether we pursue or do not pursue, officers have to consider several factors that may include the severity of the crime, the danger the suspect poses to the public if not captured, traffic conditions, and propensity for further violence,” he said. “This pursuit was monitored closely by a supervisor and as with all pursuits, it will be administratively reviewed. In this case, our suspect was safely taken into custody with no injuries to him, the public or to the officers.”
