Proud River Leadership Academy (formerly Leadership Hermiston) launched its first
class of the year on Sept. 17 at Blue Mountain Community College’s Hermiston campus.
The inaugural meeting set the tone for the year-long program, focusing on course expectations, values, and the power of leadership through community engagement. Participants began the day by aligning on shared objectives and values before rolling up their sleeves for a community service project. In a collaborative effort, the group cleaned up litter along the Umatilla River, reflecting the Academy’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community betterment.
Running from September 2024 to June 2025, the program meets on the third Tuesday of each month. Each session is designed to build tangible, relevant leadership skills while showcasing key stakeholders, industries, and the regional economy. The curriculum also focuses on growing participants’ knowledge of local and state governments and expanding their professional networks.
Participants can expect to engage in activities that support their personal and professional development, with emphasis on the following objectives:
- Expanding geographical impact area
- Strengthening leadership skills
- Showcasing local stakeholders and the regional economy
- Enhancing knowledge of local services
- Encouraging community involvement
The next class, scheduled for October, will focus on the agriculture industry in the region. Participants will visit Madison Farms in Echo and hear from Gabrielle Homer, chief financial officer of Painted Hills Natural Beef, for insights into leadership in regional agriculture and its economic significance.
