Union Pacific announced today that it will lay off nearly 200 employees at the Hinkle yard in Hermiston, a move that State Rep. Greg Smith (R-Heppner) calls “devastating.”

The railroad released a statement saying it had notified employees that as many as 195 jobs will be eliminated over the next two months as its supply warehouse and mechanical locomotive shop shut down. Union Pacific said the Hinkle yard will remain operational, but on a smaller scale.

“This is devastating news for our community,” said Smith. “The loss of nearly 200 family-wage jobs will be felt throughout House District 57, from our public schools to our small businesses. I am grateful that Worksource Oregon’s Eastern Region office in Hermiston has offered to assist those impacted.”

  1. I agree. Not only does it impact 200 people that have worked for the rail road, it also impacts the movement of freight and all of those jobs down the line.
