Ronald S. “Ron” Zumwalt died on Dec. 18, 2017 at his home in Portland at the age of 66.
He was born on June 9, 1951 in Mountain View, Ark. to Dale and Mary Wayland Zumwalt.
Ron was raised in Arkansas and Stanfield, graduating from Stanfield High School in the class of 1969. He joined the United States Air Force in 1970 and served in Vietnam before his honorable discharge in 1974. He returned to Stanfield, operating the Texaco station for a time and later working for Mikami Brothers and Wagon Trail Farms as a mechanic. He later worked at the Lindsay Ranch as a mechanic before moving to Portland in 1996 and working for Wagner Mining Equipment and then Pierce Manufacturing.
Ron married Linda Didway on May 24, 1997 in Vancouver, Wash. He was an excellent mechanic who could repair and rebuild anything. He enjoyed restoring cars, the outdoors, motorcycles, drag racing and target shooting.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Zumwalt, Portland; parents, Dale and Mary Zumwalt, Hermiston; sons, Rodney Zumwalt (Alisa) and Tommy Zumwalt, Hermiston; daughters, Sombaht Zumwalt, Portland and Caroline Jared (Greg), Hermiston; sister, Kathy Smith, Hermiston; brother, Larry Zumwalt, Tacoma, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017 at 1 p.m. at the Hermiston Cemetery.
