Sondra A. “Sandy” Fortney-Harrison, longtime resident of Hermiston, passed away quietly at her home following a short illness on March 5, 2016 at the age of 79.
She was born on February 10, 1937 in the quiet town of Caldwell, Kansas to Ivan and Katherine Klofkorn. passed away quietly at her home following a short illness on March 5, 2016 at the age of 79. Sandy graduated from high school in Newkirk, Oklahoma and soon after enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 23. She served as a Hospital Corpsman until her honorable discharge. Upon leaving the Navy, Sandy married and had five children; Michael, James, Joseph, David, and Robert Gerrior. After living and working in the small town of Vinita, OK for 16 years, she went on to graduate with an associate degree from Northeast Oklahoma A&M. Sandy then moved to Oregon and went to work at the Umatilla Army Depot. While at the depot, Sandy met and married Claude W. Harrison in January of 1990. She worked at the depot for 25 years before retiring in 2002. Sandy loved her dogs and spending time birdwatching. She enjoyed traveling, the ocean, deep sea fishing, was an avid reader, and cherished time spent with her family.
She is survived by her husband; five sons; 9 grandchildren; Devin & Brian Gerrior, sons of David and Carol Gerrior; Elizabeth, Emily, Erin, & Jonathon Gerrior of Jim and Roxanne Gerrior; Ashley, Valery, & Tiffany of Robert and Rhonda Gerrior; and one great grandson; Claude’s children: Kent Harrison with his family, Shawn Harrison with his family; granddaughter: Krystle Michael & her husband Terry; and a great grandson: Hayden.
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents and Claude’s recently departed daughter, Julie Lavimodiere.
A private family celebration will be held.
