Former Hermiston High School standout Shoni Schimmel scored 19 points to help lead her Louisville Cardinals past LSU, 73-47, Sunday to reach the regional final of the women’s NCAA basketball tournament.

The third-seeded Cardinals (33-4) had little trouble with the Lady Tigers, who have been decimated by injuries. LSU dressed just eight players for Sunday’s game.

Louisville will play Maryland on Tuesday night, matching Cardinals coach Jeff Walz against Terrapins counterpart Brenda Frese, whom he worked under from 2002-07.

Schimmel was 3-for-5 from 3-point range Sunday night and had 6 assists and a pair of rebounds to lead Louisville. Her younger sister, Jude, had 5 points, 5 assists and 3 steals in the game. As a team, Louisville poured in 12 3-pointers.

The Cardinals are hoping for a repeat of last year’s run to the championship game. A year ago, Louisville stunned the women’s college basketball world when it upset top-seeded Baylor and followed that up with another upset over No. 2 seed Tennessee, in which Schimmel scored 24 points. The Cardinals eventually lost to UConn in the title game.

Tuesday’s game against No. 4 Maryland will be shown on ESPN at 4 p.m.
