Today and tomorrow, school cooks from around the region – including Umatilla – are learning new recipes that they can take back to their schools for students to try at a special event called “Cooking Up Delicious Nutrition.”
The event is hosted by Bethel School District at Prairie Mountain School in Eugene.
At the hands-on workshop, Chef Garrett Berdan, RDN, coaches participants on cooking-from-scratch culinary skills, while preparing actual recipes. The preparation of healthy meals for healthy students emphasizes nutrient rich foods, because studies show that well-nourished kids perform better at school.
This is the final round of five statewide culinary trainings for school nutrition directors and cooks in 2015, sponsored by the Oregon Dairy Council and the Oregon Department of Education, Child Nutrition Services. In addition to Eugene, this year’s culinary training schedule included Salem/Keizer, Ontario, Umatilla and Bend.
