School District to Destroy Special Education Students’ Records

The Hermiston School District plans to destroy records of students whose participation in special education services ended between 1980 and 1998.

The district is informing parents, guardians and former special ed students that the records will be destroyed on Oct. 1. Parents, guardians and students can obtain their records, however, by signing a release form.

Special Education records include identification, evaluation, educational placement, or the provision of occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology or other related services made available as determined through the Individual Education Plan process.

These records are no longer needed by the district but may be useful to the parent/guardian or former student who may apply for social security benefits, rehabilitation services, college entrance, or other services.

If a student wants to obtain their record, he or she needs to sign a consent for release of information and provide photo identification. The record can be obtained at the Hermiston School District Office in person or can be faxed. All unclaimed records will be destroyed on Oct. 1.
