Local Girl Scout and Boy Scout groups recently proved that anyone can make a difference in their communities, no matter their age.

On April 29, 29 members of Girl Scouts of Oregon and Southwest Washington collected 1,156 pounds of nonperishable food joined by members of Boy Scouts of America Pack 645 with a collection of 276 pounds to bring in a total of 1,488 pounds of food for families in need. The annual food drive, called Scouting for Food, benefited four food banks: Agape House in Hermiston, Stanfield’s Food Basket, the Irrigon Food Bank and St. Mary’s Outreach in Pendleton.

The scouts ranged in age from 6 to 18 years old. They went out earlier in the week to post flyers in the neighborhoods they were going to cover, then went back to collect items left on the front porches. Some groups also toured their food banks to gain a better understanding of the purpose behind their service project.

The five participating Girl Scout troops were Echo Troop 10298, Irrigon Troop 12288, Umatilla Troop 50117, Pendleton Troop 51413 and Hermiston Troop 51444.
