The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office is offering tips to prevent the theft of mail and packages this holiday season.
According to the sheriff’s office, mail and package theft tend to increase as thieves try to take advantage of the season. Here are some suggestions to protect your mail and packages.
- Report any suspicious persons or vehicles to law enforcement. Provide detailed descriptions of persons, vehicles, and license plates when possible.
- Pick up your mail or packages promptly after delivery. Don’t leave it in your mailbox overnight. If you are expecting checks, credit cards, or valuable items, ask someone you trust to pick up your mail if you can’t. If having packages delivered, consider an alternate destination (like a workplace, trusted friend or family member).
- If you don’t receive a check or valuable mail you are expecting, contact the source immediately.
- Don’t send cash in the mail.
- If you are out of town, have the Post Office hold your mail until you return.
