A 23-year-old Umatilla man was shot and killed Wednesday night in a neighborhood behind the 11th Street Market.

The shooting death of Alonso G. Madrigal is the first homicide in Hermiston since Jan. 9, 2012. The Major Crime Team is investigating the shooting.

According to Hermiston Police Chief Jason Edmiston, officers responded to the neighborhood after getting a report of shots fired. While canvassing the area, officers heard additional shots fired near the market.

Edmiston said officers found Madrigal at the location and requested aid from Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services, but Madrigal was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Edmiston said it was too early in the investigation to determine what led to the shooting.

“A significant amount of physical evidence has been seized and is being analyzed by the forensic professionals with the Oregon State Police,” Edmiston said.

No arrests have been made in the shooting.
