SMART Reading invites volunteers to give one hour a week to help children read.

Volunteers with the children’s literacy program will be placed at a local elementary school or preschool. They will read with students each week, providing important reading practice time, one-on-one attention and a fun experience with books. No prior experience is necessary and all training is provided.

Jennifer Zardinejad, SMART Reading’s Northeast Area director, said more than half of Oregon’s young students are not reading at grade level. She said the statistics are very concerning.

“Volunteering with SMART is a chance to have an impact right here in our community, one book and one child at a time,” Zardinejad said. “Our mission is to spark joy and opportunity through the magic of a shared book.”
