A Stanfield man died Thursday after his vehicle went off a forest road and into the North Fork John Day River.

According to the Oregon State Police, Randy Jones, 53, of Stanfield, was westbound on the Texas Bar Road in the Umatilla National Forest near milepost 4 when his 2009 Ford F-150 left the road and traveled about 400 feet down a steep embankment before coming to a rest on its top in the river. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.

The OSP said Jones was properly restrained and was not ejected. Speed is being considered a contributing factor in the accident. A deputy medical examiner on the scene estimated the crash to have happened on Thursday morning.

The Oregon State Police was assisted by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, the Grant County water rescue team, John Day ambulance service and Long Creek fire service.

  1. I’m still in shock! I just found out today that Randy died, three weeks ago!! I found out via mail I got today from his insurance company. I opened it up and was like no, this isn’t happening. We’ve been separated for 2 years for personal reasons but remained good friends and kept in touch and I’m so sad that I wasn’t able to be there at his service so I could say good bye. That’s something I’ll never get back. It hurts that nobody bothered to contact me and that I was just chalked up as the third divorcee even though we’re not divorced. In fact our 15th Anniversary is June 10th. I will miss him for so many reasons…
