A pair of local events offer people an opportunity to burn some calories, get some fresh air and support a pair of causes on Thanksgiving Day.

Before sitting down for your holiday meal, consider participating in the Hermiston Athletic Club’s annual Turkey Day 5K or the Stanfield Walking Group’s Turkey Trot Walk/Run. Both events are held on Nov. 28.

The Turkey Day 5K begins at 9 a.m. at the Oxbow Trail, 1311 W. Elm Ave., Hermiston. Participants can walk, jog or run during this non-competitive event. Also, well-behaved pets are welcome.

Register ($20 for ages 12 and older or $15 for ages 6-11) by Sunday, Nov. 17 via www.eventbrite.com or at the HAC, 80903 Highway 395, for a discount and an event T-shirt. The late registration fee costs $5 more and does not include a shirt. Race bibs and T-shirts (if registered in advance) can be picked up Nov. 25-27 at the club.

Proceeds will benefit Made to Thrive, a Hermiston-based nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for at-risk youths in Umatilla and Morrow counties.
