If you think derbies are for soapbox cars and thoroughbred horses only, think again.
On Thursday, May 25, Desert View Elementary School in Hermiston will be the site of the Fruit and Vegetable Derby, a required scientific method/inquiry project conducted by the fourth grade classes. The assignment is to build a car out of fruits and vegetables, based on a list of requirements, and then let it “drive” down a ramp. After the derby, students will be asked to reflect on their cars and how far they went, and provide explanations for their results.
The derby will begin at approximately 9 a.m. on the outside basketball courts by the gym. For the best viewing, please sit on the south lawn.
