Tamástslikt Announces Junior Art Show Winners

At the artists’ reception on Feb. 1, Tamástslikt Cultural Institute recognized the winners of the juried competition in ArtWORKz 2014, the third annual junior art show and competition.

Judges were Lorie Baxter, Marlene Stevenson, and Ellen Taylor. Grand Prizes, Awards of Excellence, Awards of Merit, and Honorable Mentions were awarded in each age category: 15-18, 11-14, and 10 and under. People’s Choice and Best Emerging Artist were also awarded. This year’s ArtWORKz showcased over 150 pieces of art submitted by talented young artists from throughout the region.

Grand Prizes were awarded to Tutuilla Flats’ Dusti Leetch, 17, for “Splash of Life”; Long Creek’s MariJane Davis, 13, for “Feather Flight”; and Umatilla Indian Reservation’s Terry Dick, 8, for “Daniel and Pepper.”

Awards of Excellence went to Pendleton’s Lucy Oyama, 9, for “The Fall Color”; Milton-Freewater’s Chelsey Holford, 14, for “Vines of Hope”; and Alexis Sharpe, 16, of Burbank, Wash., for “Mountain Man.”

Awards of Merit went to Pendleton’s Serena Bontemps, 14, for “Bleeding Heart”; Milton-Freewater’s Tomas Landa, 18, for “Emotions”; and Claire Wildbill, 7, of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, for “Iguana.”

Honorable Mentions in the 0-10 age group were given to Katelyn Albertin of Kennewick, Wash., Ryelynn Melton, Sascha Quaempts, and Sophie G. Bronson, all of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, Elizabeth Robledo and Evan G. Pierce, both of Kennewick, LIlly Cave of Long Creek, and Andrew Snyder-Thorstad of Milton-Freewater.

In the 11-14 age group, Honorable Mentions were awarded to Lily Yoshioka, Tiah Benedict, Audrey Odman, and Mallory Erice, all of Pendleton, and Ellie Scheibner of Athena.

And for the 15-18 age group, Honorable Mentions were given to Autumn Cousinneau, Daynis Garcia and Elise Griffith, all of Milton-Freewater, and Katelynn Red Bird and Brittney Foster, both of the Umatilla Indian Reservation.

The staff at Tamástslikt Cultural Institute chose Alexis Sharpe, 16, of Burbank, for its Best Emerging Artist Award and museum visitors voted for Spirit by L’Rissa Sohappy 14, of the Umatilla Indian Reservation for People’s Choice Award.
