The Dalles-based Griffin Construction has been awarded the contract to build Hermiston’s new city hall.

The Hermiston City Council voted unanimously Monday night to award the contract to the low bidder – Griffin Construction – for $8,660,000. That bid was several hundred thousand dollars below the estimate.

The new city hall will be built on the site of the current city hall, which suffered heavy smoke damage in December 2019 when a fire broke out in the furnace. The building, constructed in 1965, was originally a bank.

The new 22,000-square-foot city hall will be a three-story building, with space for the city’s municipal court and offices for Umatilla County officials. The county agreed to pay $3 million toward the cost of the new building.

Along with the new city hall, the $8,660,000 contract also pays for replacing aging sewer and water lines around the area of city hall, as well as re-configuring the parking lot on N.E. Second Street which will include 14 additional parking spaces.

The project also allowed the city to renovate the Hermiston Public Library’s basement.
