A head-on collision on Interstate 84 Thursday night took the lives of a Boardman man and a toddler.

Fernando Javier Castaneda, 23, of Boardman, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, near milepost 165 near Boardman. A 3-year-old girl from Washington state was also killed in the collision.

According to the Oregon State Police, the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. when Castaneda’s 2005 Subaru Impreza, traveling west on I084, crossed the median and struck an eastbound 2015 Chrysler head-on.

The driver of the Chrysler, Tami R. Graves, 44, of Burbank, Wash., was taken by ambulance to Good Shepherd Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Her passenger and niece, Emmalee Kitchen, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The eastbound lanes of I-84 were closed for approximately five hours while the investigation was conducted and the wreckage was removed. OSP was assisted by the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, Boardman Police Department, Boardman Fire Department, Irrigon Fire Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
