Thomas Floyd “Tom” Martin of Hermiston died on Jan. 27, 2024 in Richland, Wash. at the age of 84.
He was born on Jan. 20, 1940 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Ralph Lucas Martin and Hazel Ruth Martin (nee Hunter).
Tom’s journey began amidst the tumult of wartime relocation, as he and his mother embarked on a train journey to reunite with his father in California, who was stationed in San Francisco with the United Fruit Company.
Tom’s life was marked by a diverse array of experiences and accomplishments. He graduated from Sequoia High School in 1958 before serving in the Air Force Reserves. Continuing his education at the College of San Mateo, Tom pursued various career paths with enthusiasm and dedication. From his tenure as a police officer in Atherton, Calif., where he forged a special bond with his police dog, Nando, to managing a camera shop in Woodside for over a decade, to becoming a meticulous title officer at Continental Land Title, and later producing stunning graphic artwork in a specialty print shop in San Francisco, Tom’s work ethic and commitment shone through. Tom was also an amazing father to his son and two daughters.
In retirement, Tom embarked on a new chapter as the proud co-owner of Aunty Ida’s Quilt Shop & Bernina Sewing Center in Hermiston, where he and his wife Ida made their home for over 21 years. His interests spanned a wide spectrum, from photography and gardening to astronomy, RC airplanes, ham radios, and vintage computers. Tom found joy in capturing the beauty of nature, particularly the majestic bison and their offspring in Yellowstone National Park.
In his later years he dedicated his time to volunteering at Good Shepherd Medical Center, assisting seniors in navigating the complexities of Medicare, and, most recently, achieving certification as a master gardener for the state of Oregon.
Tom’s legacy extends beyond his professional endeavors to the cherished relationships he nurtured. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Idamarie; his daughters, Cherie Martin (Evan Thompson, deceased) and Annmarie Macry (Paul); grandson, Jack Symons; and the memory of his son, James Martin. He is also remembered fondly by Sharon Martin, the mother of their children, as well as his brother, Alan Martin and nephews, Scott Martin and Brian Martin. To numerous nieces and nephews of his wife, he was affectionately known as Uncle Tom.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hermiston on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 1 p.m., followed by a reception where friends and family can gather to honor his memory and share stories of his remarkable life.
