Thomas J. “Tom” McCann of Stanfield passed away at his home in Stanfield on April 16, 2022 at the age of 84.

He was born on Dec. 28, 1937 near Little Rock, Ark. to Ralph and Marie McCann.

Tom moved with his family from Arkansas to Los Angeles, Calif. when he was a child. He attended school in Los Angeles, graduating from Hollywood High School in the class of 1956. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served during the Vietnam War. He continued serving in the Naval Reserve for over 26 years. He was called back to duty in the early 1990s to serve during Desert Storm. Tom had lived with his family in Stanfield since 1977. He served as the chief of police of the Stanfield Police Department from 1979 until 1993. He also worked as a Umatilla County marine deputy from 1996 until 2020. He was the mayor of Stanfield from 1995 until his passing. He also served as president of the Oregon Association of Chief of Police, as well as the Oregon Special District Association. He was a member of the Hermiston Kiwanis Club and served on the Board of Directors of the Stanfield Fire District. He served in many capacities in the Stanfield community, as well as in the surrounding areas.

Tom was a professional drummer, which he began as a young child, and he carried the talent throughout his life. Tom married Sharone Pettus in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Dec. 23, 1971. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sharone; children, Thomas Pollard, Randall McCann, Linda McCann-Klein, Terrance McCann and Travis McCann; 17 grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 850 S.W. 11th St., Hermiston.

Family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Veterans Memorial Park in care of City of Stanfield, P.O. Box 369, Stanfield, Ore., 97875.
