Two Hermiston residents are in jail and face charges in Oregon and Washington after a pursuit Friday morning.
On July 31, officers from the Hermiston Police Department responded to several citizen calls of shots fired in the 1000 block of S.W. 11th St. The involved vehicle was seen approaching Interstate 84, where an Oregon State trooper located it traveling westbound.
The trooper attempted to stop the suspect van, but the driver continued on and crossed the Columbia River bridge into Washington.
At that point, the Washington State Patrol deployed a tire deflation device, ultimately ending the pursuit. The driver and passenger then attempted to outrun but were caught after a short struggle.
Hermiston residents Elfrid Joab Herrarte and Jodyci Raj Juan Barajas were taken into custody and lodged at the Benton County Jail. Both men face criminal charges in Oregon and Washington.

Evidently someone isn’t aware of the escalation in violent crime under the Democratic controlled, barely, state government and Federal government. It started with the George Floyd riots, of which we had actual peaceful protests, unlike virtually every large city, Portland being a perfect example. I’m not a Trump fan, but the only thing that made a real dent was when Federal law enforcement went in. Up to that point, violent crime, murder especially had dropped by half what it was when the ineffective weapons ban was in existence, per the 2003 DOJ report. The proof being it continued into the teens before stabilizing, per FBI Uniform Crime Reports. It’s very possible the shooting was gang related as well, though right now we don’t know, but it’s a huge problem across the river up into the Yakima area. Get your facts straight by researching unbiased sources.
