Umatilla’s community garden has everything it needs to grow a wide variety of vegetables with the exception of just one thing – gardeners.
Chelle Hankinson, Umatilla’s community garden coordinator, said a bundle of donated plants were provided by Kopacz Nursery, including tomatoes, peppers, squash, pumpkins and more. There are at least five 12-foot-by-12-foot plots waiting to be tilled so the seeds can be planted. But, she said, she needs volunteers.
“I am desperate for some extra planting help,” she said. “I have very few volunteers available right now.”
Hankinson said any help would be appreciated. The gardens are located behind the Pine Tree Head Start location on Pine Tree Avenue in Umatilla. She said she plans to be on the site all day Tuesday and mostly likely on Wednesday morning, as well.
“I have tools – shovels, one large tiller, two small tillers and lots of gloves,” she said.
Northeast Oregon Now posted a story on the community gardens in May.
