Umatilla County is asking the public to imagine a regional trail system that interconnects Umatilla, Hermiston, Stanfield, and Echo to increase recreation and community livability.
With the help of the National Park Service’s Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program, these four cities and the county have joined forces to develop a conceptual trails plan for the west Umatilla County region.
A project steering committee made up of trail advocates, local governments, state and federal resource agencies and other entities is asking for the public to share ideas for a recreational trail system. Input from the public will be used to help guide the Umatilla River Trails project as a concept plan is developed. There will be four workshops in which the public can attend and offer their input.
Each workshop will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. with a kickoff presentation at 5:30 pm each evening. Workshop dates and locations are as follows:
- Oct.7 in Umatilla at Umatilla City Hall, 700 6th St.
- Oct. 8 in Echo at Echo City Hall, 20 Bonanza St.
- Oct. 9 in Stanfield at Stanfield School Cafeteria, 1120 N Main St.
- Oct. 10 in 2019 Hermiston at the Hermiston Community Center, 415 S Highway 395
At each of the workshops, a brief overview of the project, development timeline, workshop activities, and next steps towards completion will be provided. Members of the public can view existing trail information, participate in a user survey, and will be able to provide additional guidance for a conceptual trails plan that would provide connectivity between west county communities.
The event will include family-friendly activities for people of all ages. Refreshments and Spanish translation will be available. For more information about the Umatilla River Trails project, contact Robert Waldher at robert.waldher@umatillacounty.net or call 541-278-6252.
