A new Umatilla Electric Cooperative (UEC) substation recently came on line at the South Hermiston Industrial Park.
The newly energized Kelli Boulevard Substation now ranks as one of UEC’s largest in service. The substation was completed and energized in October 2024. Designed with significant capacity, the substation is strategically connected to a robust transmission source in southern Hermiston. This integration enhances the overall capacity, resilience, reliability, and flexibility of UEC’s electrical system, benefitting the majority of the cooperative’s membership in the area, while positioning the Hermiston area for sustained growth and development.
To bring the Kelli Boulevard Substation to life, the project required the completion of several key components:
- 5.5 miles of newly constructed transmission line
- 2.5 million pounds of steel structures erected
- 350,000 feet (over 66 miles) of new conductor installed
- 4 miles of existing distribution line converted from overhead to underground service
Construction of the transmission infrastructure was completed in just four months — one month ahead of schedule.
“UEC is extremely proud of the employees, consultants, contractors, and material suppliers who partnered with us to make this project a success,” said Chad Campfield, superintendent of engineering. “This achievement is a testament to their hard work and collaboration, and it underscores our commitment to delivering reliable power while fostering economic opportunities for the communities we serve.”
