Umatilla Inmate's Death Under Investigation

A 29-year-old inmate at Two Rivers Correctional Institution in Umatilla died unexpectedly and his death is being investigated by the Oregon State Police.

The Oregon Department of Corrections announced Sunday that Inmate Rigoberto Corono-Avila was transported off-site for medical care Saturday afternoon and was pronounced dead a few hours later, according to the Oregon Department of Corrections.

Two Rivers Correctional Institution house about 1,800 male inmates. Corono-Avila was sentenced for felony assault and sex abuse charges, and his earliest release date was six months away. The Department of Corrections did not release any details about the circumstances surrounding Corono-Avila’s death. As with all unanticipated deaths in state prisons, Corono-Avila’s death is being investigated by the OSP Criminal Investigation Division.

Corono-Avila’s death is the seventh death since March of 2015.
