A local teacher, Valerie May, received a statewide math education award.

May, who teaches third grade at McNary Heights Elementary School in Umatilla, earned the 2024 Mildred Bennett Elementary Math Education Award, according to a press release from the Umatilla School District. The Oregon Council of Teachers of Mathematics presented the award Thursday, Aug. 8, during the Oregon Math Leaders Conference at Oregon State University in Corvallis.

The award recognizes elementary or middle school teachers who “embody a spirit of joy and work ethic” and implement innovative ideas as well as commit time and energy to improve their teaching, all of which support high-quality statewide math education, according to the press release.

Your impact on the lives of your students extends far beyond the classroom,” Umatilla School District Superintendent Heidi Sipe said to May in a letter that was read aloud during the ceremony. “You have instilled in them a love of learning, a sense of curiosity, and a belief in their own potential. You have empowered them to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, and responsible citizens.”

Sipe also complimented May’s dedication to her students in creating a welcoming and supporting learning environment and advocating for their needs. May’s recognition with the Mildred Bennett Award highlights her strong commitment to educational excellence, the release said.
