In February, anyone interested in re-living their middle school or high school experience will have the chance.

As part of an effort to connect with community members, the Umatilla School District will offer a “day in the life of a student” event in early 2014. Community members will pair with a selected Umatilla student and then shadow that student during a full school day.

“We’re looking for community members to follow a kid through their entire day. If a kid goes to the after-school program, stay for the afterschool program,” Heidi Sipe, district superintendent, said Thursday. “I think it will be really fun.”

The district already offers a “Take Your Parent to School Day” at Clara Brownell Middle School. The February program would expand that sort of event out to interested community members. After the event, volunteers would participate in a “debrief” to talk about their experiences during the day and provide feedback for the district.

Information from the event would be used in March to help the Umatilla School Board of Directors form the district goals for the next year.

The event is open to anyone in the community, but all participants must pass the district’s volunteer screening, which includes a background check. For more information or to sign up, call the district office or email Sipe at sipeh@umatillasd.org.
