Umatilla’s Dick Surber Sr. Passes Away at 72

Charles R. “Dick” Surber Sr. died on Jan. 27, 2018 at his home in Umatilla at the age of 72.

He was born on Jan. 24, 1946 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Vernon Sr. and LaVeta Kinsey Surber.

Dick was raised and attended schools in Enterprise, graduating from Enterprise High School in 1965. He was united in marriage to Anna L. Finley on Jan. 26, 1966 in Enterprise.

Dick worked in logging and driving truck until moving to Hermiston in 1978. He went to work for Circle C Farms and then moved to Umatilla in 1980 and went to work for Mikami Brothers. He worked for Mikami Brothers as a field foreman until they sold the farm, and he continued to work at their fresh pack facility until he retired in 2007. He loved spending time in the outdoors hunting, fishing and camping, and he was an avid rock hound.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Anna Surber, Umatilla; sons, Charles Surber Jr. “Bud” (LaVerra), Hermiston, John “JP” Surber, Umatilla and Thomas Surber (Teri), Umatilla; brothers, Vernon Surber Jr., Clarkston, Wash., Dan Surber, Hermiston and David Surber, Redmond; sisters, Hannah Beaudion, Enterprise and Maye Surber, Missoula, Mont.; 19 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; son, James Surber; and infant sister, Nancy K. Surber.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Feb. 2, 2018 at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 14 Grant St., Umatilla.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, Feb. 5, 2018 at 1 p.m. at the Enterprise Cemetery.
